BUS RIDES AND BOOM BAP

Getting into graffiti wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. This was still early internet, where my only access to graffiti were hard copies, 12oz prophet and Art crimes. I was obsessed with graff, it consumed (and still does) my complete focus. I searched out print media and came across Piecebook: The secret drawings of graffiti writers in my local library.
I eventually stole the copy and spent hours on the bus studying New York wildstyle. The bboy characters, letter structures and shapes all informed my practice for years. My English teacher confided his history in NJ to me and gave me my first Krink markers and a copy of Sneak Attack on DVD. I was making cap adapters out of rusto stock tips and painting my whole piece with one NY fat cap soaked in Nail Polish. Nas and Pete Rock filled my headphones and Frank Ocean and Sade stayed up late at night with me sketching.
These formative years were a long process of trial and error. I was convinced that regardless of others' acceptance I loved this craft and I found the place I wanted to be. This obsession has taken me places I’d never imagined I’d go. Now more than a decade later I want to focus on how I can begin to give back.

I think about how dope it would have been as a new jack to have had a chance to meet some seasoned writers and get some critique. The kid that now feel like he belongs. I hated how shut out some of the older writers made me feel. So I'm creating the community I never had. If that makes someone else feel a little less alone, then everything has come full circle.
